Under law, your Landlord is required to protect your deposit in one of three government-backed schemes. This means, that they must physically put your deposit in one of these schemes, to ensure that nothing happens to it. If they didn’t do this, they risked your money and risked losing it, meaning that, you are liable for compensation.

Law requires your landlord, to protect your deposit within 30 days of you paying it. If they didn’t do that, then you can still make a claim, regardless of whether they later deposited it.
